5th African Learning Institute (ALI)

October 17, 2022 @ 8:00 am - October 23, 2022 @ 5:00 pm

The African Learning Institute, ALI is a project of the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD). It is an educational space where researchers, development practitioners, students and communities meet through transdisciplinary interventions. This is a special project of cikod focusing on research and the discourse around endogenous development and how this contributes to building resilient community development programmes in Ghana.

In this connection, Cikod organizes occasional events in collaboration with research institutions, development practitioners, policy makers and local communities to jointly explore, learn and identify areas for research into community knowledge systems, worldviews, and the resources that they have that contribute to strengthening their resilience to be able to cope or mitigate the African development crisis based on endogenous development principles. A paramount aim of the ALI is to contribute to decolonizing mindsets in such a way as to steer policies and programming towards African cantered solutions.

This fifth ALI is a collaborative between the Knowledge, Technology and Innovations centre of Wageningen University and Research (WUR) and CIKOD on the   theme:Reviving Indigenous Knowledge to Enhance Biodiversity in Ghana’s agroecological food systems” from the 17th to 23rd  of October 2022 in Techiman. The event will be hosted by the Abrono Organic Farmers Pogramme (ABOFAP) in Forikrom. This ALI is  planned in the wake of the current crisis in Ghana’s agriculture where farming in many rural communities have been abandoned because of lack of so called modern farm inputs (chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides, improved seeds, etc in the wake of the impact of Covid 19. This is in the face of available traditional ecological knowledge and inputs that have the potential to improve ecoculturally sustainable production with appropriate investment in research and extension.

The goal of this ALI is to encourage development organizations in Ghana that are sponsoring agriculture to focus more on supporting Ghana’s local food systems in the face of the current crisis rather than the industrial food system which is the mainstream food policy in Ghana. The mainstream industrial food policy will increase productivity in the short run but is bedeviled with attendant negative impact on climate change and ecological destruction. The specific goal is to create awareness among development organizations in Ghana and come up with four community research questions for decolonizing food systems in Ghana through transdisciplinary research with the rural farmers in the driving seat.
